About The Project

Typica 401 de Puerto Rico Project is Sandra Farms' dream to once again comercialize the heirloom varietal that arrived in Puerto Rico in 1736 ! By 1898, it had made Puerto Rico the world's 6th largest exporter of coffee! Now, given Puero Rico's land size, that is no small achievement for the Island. Certainly, the excellent cup offered by the Typica varietal must have been behind the demand the product.

Around 1960, farming Bourbon, first, in full sun, became the go-to practice, and Typica 401 was abandoned in Puerto Rico, while Kona HI, Jamaica Blue Mountains, and Boquete Panama, persevered with the highest quality production of Typica.

Today in Puerto Rico, production of Bourbon can hardly be found throughout the Island, not to mention Typica 401. In fact, Puerto Rico is now basically limited to offering only one hybrid varietal!

Having found thousands of Typica 401 de Puerto Rico thriving in the thick forest at Sandra Farms, similar to their terroir in Ethiopia(?), we saw not only an opportunity to again produce yesteryear's coffee of Popes and Kings, but to try to put Puerto Rico back on the coffee map as well to perform en beau geste.

We croud funded the project and nearly a 1000 citizens helped us with $15/tree. We promised to give them the coffee we produce on the third year, which is this 2023-2024 harvest, because we have been working with their dunds. We thank everyone one who joined us in the dream. How wonderful to know there are many dreamers out there!
